Age – the competition shall be open to all male and female vocal applicants between the ages of 17-25 years old without respect to race, ethnicity or sexual orientation.
Qualifications – the competition shall be open to amateur vocalists regardless of whether they are currently enrolled in primary, secondary, or post secondary education.
Registration Fee – all applicants shall pay a one-time only registration fee in the amount of twenty-five dollars ($25.00). There shall be no limit to the number of applicants, however registration shall occur throughout the month of February.
Application Fee Process – Applicants will be adjudicated throughout the month of January. The top five entrants will be notified of their acceptance by a Society representative in early March. At that time we will confirm their eligibility to perform on April 27th in Washington, DC.
On-Line Application – This will be filled out once the applicants have passed the initial round of adjudication. Finalists will be notified via e-mail and their names posted on the host website announcing that they have been selected to compete in the April final competition. The application can be found on our participation page.
Adjudication – the judges in this year’s competition have been personally selected from throughout the Washington metropolitan area and hail from the area’s most prestigious academic institutions. They further represent the vocal pedagogies of those institutions’ jazz vocal departments. Each of the four chosen judges are established educators, performers and individual performing artists in their own right:
• Alexis Cole (SUNY – Purchase)
• Darden Purcell (George Mason University)
• Sara Jones (Towson University)
Each of these individuals will guide your vocal submission through the adjudication process to determine final eligibility. All decisions of these judges shall be final and left to their own discretion.
Downloadable Charts – once initial registration payment has been made, each registrant shall receive a set of three downloadable vocal charts delivered to their Inbox. It shall be the sole responsibility of the registrant to produce a downloadable audition that shall serve to provide the judges with their on-line auditions.
Subsequent Submission – The registrant’s audition file shall become the sole property of the sponsoring organization and shall not be returned regardless of whether the submission is accepted or submitted into the final phase of the competition. Once the registrant’s submission has been approved, the registrant will be notified and invited to compete in the live phase of the annual competition.
Performance Panel – all competition finalists shall be adjudicated using a professional pianist in front of the prescribed judges identified herein. All judges’ decisions shall be final and the decision shall be announced no later than the second and final day of the competition dates.
